Trees and their products

Year level: Middle primary

Learning outcome

Students will recognise forest products in their everyday lives, lives of others and define their sustainable use.

Create a list or images of timber and forest products (look around your environment).
Add any of the following items which could be included:

Paper
Rattan
Resin
Medicines such as Echinacea, ginseng, St John’s Wort
firewood
furniture
honey
sandalwood
palm oil

Research, in small groups, one of the items to create a presentation about it: Where does it grow? How long does it take to grow? How is it harvested? How it is it used? How does it contribute to cultural and economic activities? Is it managed sustainably?

Combine the information to create a prioritised list of sustainable forest products.

Debate: People need to change the way they use forest products

Assessment task

Students create a personal action plan about the use of forest products in their own lives.
