Women as peace builders

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcomes
Students investigate the specific role women play in the building of peace.

Investigate situations where women have played or are playing major roles in bringing peace to their country or community. (http://www.1000peacewomen.org/ is a helpful start)

  • What roles have women taken during conflict and peace building?
  • How have they contributed to successful peace building?
  • What special needs would they have?
  • What sorts of conditions and support have been necessary to help women in these roles?

Create a role play of a community meeting where women and men try to create a priority list of activities for building peace. What questions would you have of others? What compromises might you be prepared to make?

Assessment task

Describe how conflict affects women and how this contributes to their role as peace builders.

Women in small business
Women in Bougainville are trained to run small businesses to assist in the economic recovery after the conflict.
