Livestock and livelihoods

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students evaluate the effectiveness of the Du An project (China) in long-term poverty alleviation for women.

Read the case study Livestock and livelihoods: escaping poverty in rural China

Locate Guangxi and Du An on a map of China. Do the features on the map corroborate the description given in the case study? What other features might affect people's livelihoods?

Draw a flow chart showing how the aid projects in Du An sought to overcome poverty. Show the causes of poverty, how the project addressed these, and the setbacks and achievements experienced.

Outline some reasons why women may have been targeted in the project.

Discuss

  • How might the changes improve the lives of women?
  • How might these changes reduce poverty for the communities?
  • What other aspects of the project would make like easier for all?

Imagine you are a member of the Du An Women's Union. Write a letter to AusAID or CARE Australia explaining why and how you think the communities will benefit if women take part in the training and loan schemes.

Devise a training course about managing a loan for women in remote villages in Du An. Remember, some of the women are illiterate and speak another dialect.

  • Draw (or find) some pictures to teach one piece of information you have included in your course.
  • Women already work more hours than men, how could they make time to take on these extra duties?
  • Teach your partner using just the pictures.
  • Test one another's knowledge through an oral test.

Imagine you are a journalist. Write an article on the 1998 floods and their effects on the people of Du An county. Include at least one interview with a participant in the Du An project, expressing how the floods affected her family and others in the project.

Assessment task
Evaluate the effectiveness of the project in alleviating poverty long term for women in Du An.
