Poverty reduction - Diamond ranking

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcome

Students evaluate strategies for reducing poverty

Brainstorm specific strategies for alleviating poverty.

Evaluate each strategy.
Consider the positive and negative effects for:

  • community members (men and women)
  • political leaders in the country
  • environment
  • foreign investors
  • aid donors.

Would all people benefit from some people be worse off? Why? How could the negative effects be minimised?

Prioritise or 'diamond rank' the top nine strategies in order of effectiveness for alleviating poverty. Write each strategy on a separate piece of paper and place the strategy considered most effective at the top of the diamond, the two second-most effective strategies on the second level, the three third-most important strategies on the third level, and so on, with the strategy considered least important at the bottom.

Discuss your rankings with two others and attempt to reach agreement on a priority order.

Explain your recommendations to the class and attempt to agree on one priority order.

Discuss

  • Is this an easy process? Why or why not?
  • What has the activity highlighted generally about strategies for alleviating poverty?

Explain how alleviating poverty will contribute to a better world for all people.

Review your personal concept of poverty and consider how this affects your priorities for poverty alleviation.

Assessment task
