Allocating aid - Role play

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcomes

Students research, interpret and evaluate data about the composition and direction of Australia's overseas aid

Imagine it is the period leading up to the preparation of the Federal Budget. The Australian economy is growing strongly with GDP at 4.75% per annum, unemployment at 5.5% and inflation at 3% per annum. During the previous year there have been a number of international crises, many of which are in the Asia Pacific area.

Prepare a recommendation about the level of aid for the next financial year from the point of view of one of the following roles. (Check the level of Australia's official overseas aid in relation to GNI and the UN target is 0.7% of GNI.)

Roles:

  • Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs
  • Representatives of opposition political parties
  • Representatives of various NGOs which may focus on: relief aid, women's issues, community development, education
  • Trade Union representatives
  • Church representatives
  • Media personality who is against overseas aid

Role play the discussion that an open forum of these people would have and reach a conclusion about the level of aid for the coming year and projections for the following five years.

Assessment task

Write a statement outlining your opinion about the current level of the Australian government's overseas aid program. Present a case with supporting evidence for your opinion.
