Australia's aid program

Finding out about the Australian overseas aid program

Year level: Upper secondary

Learning outcomes

Students describe ways the Australian Government's overseas aid program is used to assist developing economies demonstrating an understanding of factors that can impede or facilitate aid programs

Read case studies on this website and other materials on the AusAID website http://www.ausaid.gov.au/ to develop an understanding of Australia's overseas aid program.

Research how an Australian Non-Government Organisation (NGO) works with AusAID to deliver aid. Look up the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) website http://www.acfid.asn.au for a links to most NGOs.

Discuss the Australian overseas aid program.

  • Why does Australia have an aid program?
  • What is the focus of Australia's aid program?
  • Which countries receive the most aid from Australia? Why?
  • How is Australian aid delivered?
  • What are the benefits to the aid receiving countries?
  • What problems might be faced in delivering aid?

Write a report of evaluating the effectiveness of the Australian overseas aid program using information gathered. This may be in the form of a newspaper or magazine report, promotional display or presentation for a school assembly. You may include photographs, illustrations, or imaginary diaries of or interviews with participants of a particular project (aid worker, community members, AusAID).

Assessment task

Debate "How effective are current aid delivery practices in meeting the objectives of the Australian overseas aid program?"
