Australian Council for International Development (ACFID)

The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) is the independent national association of Australian non-government organisations working in the field of international aid and development. It has about 80 members who have committed to the Code of Conduct which outlines standards for management, communication ad spending of funds raised. Resources on the site include background information current aid issues and links to the member NGOs.


Australian Development Gateway

The Australian Development Gateway is a knowledge-sharing website, supporting people working in Asia Pacific countries to reduce poverty and promote sustainability. It is a mechanism for Australians and others in the Asia Pacific region to contribute knowledge and to engage in vigorous discussion. By accessing the ADG, people working in the field of development will be able to collaborate more effectively by sharing practical knowledge faster. They will be further empowered in developing policies and programs, researching issues, forming alliances and working towards sustainable growth and poverty reduction.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is a Paris-based intergovernmental organisation whose purpose is to provide its 22 Member countries with a forum in which governments can compare their experiences, discuss the problems they share and seek solutions which can then be applied within their own national contexts. The Organisation is thus entirely at the service of its Member countries. It forms a homogeneous entity in that each Member country is committed to the principles of the market economy and pluralistic democracy. The fundamental task of the OECD is straightforward: namely to enable its members to consult and co-operate with each other in order to achieve the highest sustainable economic growth in their countries and improve the economic and social well-being of their populations.

The World Bank Group's mission is to fight poverty and improve the living standards of people in the developing world. It is a development bank which provides low-interest loans, interest-free credit, grants, policy advice, technical assistance and knowledge sharing services to low and middle-income countries to reduce poverty. The Bank promotes growth to create jobs, and to empower poor people to take advantage of economic opportunities. The Bank is strongly committed to the Millennium Development Goals which target poverty, school enrolments, child mortality, maternal health, disease, and access to water. It is currently involved in more than 1,800 projects, in virtually every sector and developing country.

Annual Report (AusAID)

Annual Reports for AusAID and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are normally tabled in Parliament in October each year. The reports are in two volumes, of which the second relates directly to AusAID activities. The annual report provides an account to parliament of the agency's performance and achievements during the previous year.

Australian Aid: Promoting Growth and Stability (White Paper)

The 2006 White Paper, Australian Aid: Promoting Growth and Stability provides the strategic framework to guide the direction and delivery of Australia's overseas aid program over the next ten years. A combination of infrastructure, health and education initiatives is a key feature of the White Paper. Australia will focus on getting more children into school for longer and for a better quality education. Increased health assistance will focuses on basic services for women and children and on tackling major diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. Countries that demonstrate improved governance will be rewarded with an increase of up to 10 per cent of their aid allocation.


Clearing Landmines

Mine action is an important part of Australia's humanitarian aid program. Land mines and unexploded ordnance are serious obstacles to sustainable development in many of the world's poorest countries. Mines compound refugee problems, lay waste to large tracts of potentially productive land and interfere with transportation and communication. Australia is a leading contributor to international mine clearance, mine awareness and victim assistance programs


Global Recession

The Australian Government is committed to responding effectively to the global recession. AusAID has developed a strategic Action Plan for responding to the Global Recession which sets out to protect current achievements in poverty reduction and progress towards the Millennium Development Goals and to support an early, sustainable return to growth. Priority will be given to generating employment and restoring growth; supporting delivery of basic services, such as health care and education, to the poor; and protecting the vulnerable.

Solomon Islands Transitional Country Strategy 2006-mid2007

Since July 2003 Australia has provided development assistance to Solomon Islands through the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) and a program of bilateral development assistance. This strategy document provides a framework for the assistance administered by AusAID and delivered through RAMSI and the bilateral program.
