Emailing a volunteer

Year level: Upper primary/Lower secondary

Learning Outcomes

Students evaluate the contributions of volunteers in addressing the issues of their projects.

Use the de Bono six thinking hats to consider volunteering:

white hat - What is volunteering?

red hat - Why might people volunteer?

black hat - What problems might volunteers face?

yellow hat - What are the benefits of volunteering for the volunteer and the community?

green hat - What job would you like to volunteer to do?

blue hat - Would you volunteer? Why or why not?

Choose one of the volunteers profiled in the following case studies:

Brett

Discuss in small groups:

  • What issues does their project address?
  • Why did the community need a volunteer?
  • What skills did the volunteer contribute to the project?
  • What training might the volunteer have received?
  • How has the volunteer helped the community?
  • How would the volunteer help build friendships between the community and Australia?
Assessment task

Write an imaginary e-mail to the volunteer asking them some of the questions about their work on their project and life in their host country. Include some of your ideas about their project.
