Young boys enjoy the bilingual picture story
book about elephant conservation
James Walters, a graphic designer who has worked in the Australian advertising
industry, worked as an Australian Youth Ambassador with the Phnom Penh-based
non-government organisation, Save Cambodia's Wildlife. His brief was to write
and design a book in support of the campaign to preserve Cambodia's fast dwindling
population of elephants.
He wrote and illustrated (with some help from the team at Save Cambodia's Wildlife)
'The Little White Elephant', a bilingual (Khmer and English) picture story book
for children, especially of farming and hunting families. 'The Little White
Elephant' proved an instant success because it tackled the difficult questions
around farmers and elephants sharing the environment in an appealing story for
children. Elephants were highlighted for their ecological and cultural value
and not as just seen as pests which destroy crops.
The former youth ambassador is now back in Cambodia working on a new children's
book.
