Integrated Pest Management in Indonesia

Learning outcomes

Students explore the benefits of the Integrated Pest Management approach

Brainstorm your ideas about pest damage on food production.

Discuss

  • What are the environmental affects of using pesticides?
  • What can be done to protect crops from pest damage without harming the environment?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of using pesticides?

Review what you know about the environment, diet and food production in Indonesia.

Use an atlas and other reference materials to locate the main rice growing areas in Indonesia. Look at the topography and rainfall patterns of these areas. Suggest reasons for the location of the main rice growing areas.

Define the following terms:

  • pesticides
  • sustainable agriculture
  • ecology

Write a report about Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the local farmers' newsletter. Describe the benefits of the program and provide examples of how it has improved the lives of rice farmers and their families and communities.
