Creating a quiz

Create a new quiz

There is a Quiz Builder Wizard which guides you through the steps to create a new quiz.

  1. Create a name for your quiz
Make this title as short but as informative as possible about the content of the quiz
eg South East Asian Peoples or Rebuilding East Timor

  2. Enter a description of your quiz
Include a short description of the content or intended learning outcomes plus an overview of what the student is required to do.
eg. There are many steps in growing and harvesting rice so it is ready to eat. Select the names of the steps from the description.
This description appears at the top of each page of the quiz.

  3. Teaching Levels
Click the box for each level of student to which this quiz would be appropriate.
You can select multiple teaching levels.

  4. Click Next to create your quiz.
Note that if you click Close at this point your quiz will not be saved.

Adding Questions

  1. Note the Quiz Code for your quiz. The Quiz Code is made up of letters and numerals and can be given to your students so they can access this quiz.

  2. Click on Add Question

  3. Choose the appropriate Type of question.

There are three Types of question available in this Quiz builder:
    Dropdown list
Dropdown list option can be used for a question which has a single correct answer.
Using a drop down list rather than a radio button saves space and makes for less text on the screen at the one time, allowing the student to concentrate on the question before seeing all the answers. Using dropdown lists means that you cannot print the quiz and administer it on paper if online access is unavailable or impractical. Drop down lists can also require greater mouse control by the student.

    Radio button
Radio button option can be used for a question which has a single correct answer.
The student clicks once in the button for their desired answer. To change an answer simply click in another radio button and the original option will become deselected.
Use of the radio button option requires all answers to be displayed on the screen which can lead to a busy screen of text and involve scrolling down the page to complete the quiz. Quizzes using radio buttons can be printed and administered on paper if online access is impractical.

    Checkbox
Checkbox option can be used for a question which has multiple correct answers.
Students click once in as many checkboxes as they like. To untick a box requires a second click in that box.

You are able to use a variety of question types throughout your quiz, but it is less confusing if you select either dropdown lists or radio buttons for your single answer questions rather than mixing them in the one quiz.

  4. Type your Question into the box.

  5. In the Response when Correct box, type the message you would like students to see when they answer the question correctly. You can leave the default Correct. text there, or enter a more creative response that provides feedback to help students check they have truly understood the answer (and not just had a lucky guess), eg. Yes. Rice is a grain.
Note: Do NOT enter the answer to your question in this box. You will do this on the next screen.

  6. In the Response when Incorrect box, type the message you would like students to see when they answer the question incorrectly. You can leave the default Incorrect. text there, or enter a more constructive response in order to provide feedback that helps students understand their mistake and develop true understanding and comprehension, or that helps them to locate the correct answer, eg. Incorrect. Hint: Reread the section on Rice Production to find the correct answer. This response will be the same for all incorrect responses to this question so your response needs to be general enough to cover all incorrect responses to this question.
Note: Do NOT enter the incorrect responses to your question in this box. You will do this on the next screen.

  3. Click in the radio box for each of the correct answers.

  4. Click Add Another Question to continue adding questions, or Finished to save and return to menu.
