A new resource added to the online project is Trees Are Terrific...Travels with Pierre, to help Lower Primary students gain an appreciation of trees. They are encouraged to write about their favourite tree and upload a photo in the forum.

Exploring Humanitarian Law

International Humanitarian Law seeks to limit the effects of armed conflict by setting out rules on the ways in which war may be waged. It protects persons who are not or are no longer participating in the hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare. The International Committee of the Red Cross’s Exploring Humanitarian Law website has a wide range of teaching resources, workshops, training videos and an online discussion forum.

Amnesty International Report 2009

Amnesty International’s annual report on the state of the world’s human rights highlights the human rights issues around the Global Financial Crisis. The website has detailed country summaries and a number of multimedia features, such as photo montages, video clips, and customizable charts and tables. The Global Themes area includes topical overviews of some of the most pressing issues around the world, including violence against women, death penalty, demand for dignity of people trapped in poverty, and the ethical considerations surrounding counter terrorism tactics.

Peace Corps Challenge

The American volunteer organisation Peace Corps’ new educational game helps students to get a taste of life and work as a Peace Corps Volunteer. The interactive game introduces students to village life and some of the complex issues of survival they face. "Writing for Rights" in Indigenous Rights for pre-service teachers

Social Educators Association of Australia (SEAA) and Amnesty International Australia (AIA) invite pre-service teachers to submit an original unit of work about Indigenous Rights by 20 November 2009. Prizes for best primary and best secondary units include membership of SEAA and AIA, conference fees, publication and AIA merchandise to the value of $150 and a certificate. The Reach Foundation (Reach) believes every young person should have the support and self-belief to fulfil their potential and dare to dream. Reach workshops are unique, they are run by young people empowered to inspire other young people. Led by these diverse, dynamic and experienced facilitators - participants can relate to each other, enabling them to demonstrate an ability to act despite judgment amongst their peers.

Select 20 of your Year 9 and/or Year 10 students and at least one teacher. There is no cost to attend this workshop and a light snack will be provided to students at the workshop.
