In the news
Papua New Guinea coup
Papua New Guinea is a country with great cultural diversity and over 700 languages. Since independence from Australia in1975 there has been a high turn-over of parliamentarians at and between elections. At the national elections held in 2007, incumbent Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare's National Alliance party won the highest number of seats (27 out of 109). In February 2011, Sir Michael was suspended from office and continued on sick leave for much of the year. In August, Works Minister and former Treasurer, Peter O’Neill was voted in on the floor of parliament, by a margin of 70-24 votes, as the Prime Minister. In mid-December the Supreme Court reinstated Sir Michael and his minority government but Peter O’Neill continued in the role of Prime Minister creating a country with two Prime Ministers. Elections are due in June 2012.
