Small group work is one of the most important strategies when teaching with a global perspective. The processes which students learn and use through participating collaboratively in small group work provide them with the skills and attitudes that are at the heart of global education. These include active participation, working together on group goals, communication skills, tolerance, valuing diversity, learning leadership skills that empower others, and creativity. These are the very attributes that students need in order to become global citizens of the future. Small group work can be used in many areas of the curriculum. Many teachers of students in the early years have successfully incorporated specific roles into some group work to enable them to develop a variety of skills and maintain flat leadership within a group as opposed to developing a hierarchy. These roles may include recorder, reporter, encourager, observer and chairperson. Small groups can be formed with two sets of buddies.
