Images of poverty
Purpose
This activity is suitable for older students. Students critically view images presented of developing countries and explore the images for bias.
Preparation
- photographs and pictures of people from developing countries.
Procedure
Look at some photographs. Critically view them by asking questions, such as:
- How does the photograph make you feel?
- Who might have taken the photograph?
- What message do they want you to get?
- Why are they presenting this image?
- How do you think they want you to feel?
- What images does it give you of people in that country?
- Do you think that there are things that the photograph does not show you?
A useful source of photos for activities such as this is AusAID's Focus magazine.
